Living with a Pharaoh Hound
"There is never a dull moment with a Pharaoh Hound around." - Julie Gwin
Quiet and dignified one minute then clownish and playful the next. You never know what to expect from your Pharaoh Hound. Every day is a new adventure, full of surprises even for long-time owners. A Pharaoh Hound is reserved with strangers but an active and loving part of their owner’s household. They love to go for a good run in the yard or a brisk walk, but will settle down on a soft surface (usually a sofa with a ‘blanky’) and quietly watch television with you at night.
Like all hounds, they like to bark and some will dig, but will respect defined boundaries in the house. When outside fenced areas, they need to be on a leash at all times because they like nothing better than chasing a rabbit or squirrel and will do so whenever given the opportunity. They are very intelligent and have long memories for both good and bad things.
They are not for timid owners. As puppies, they need to be extensively socialized with both people and other animals. They love activities and can be trained to do nearly anything, as long as you have a soft hand and patience. They can be stubborn and have a mind of their own but ultimately like to please their owners.
All of them are athletes at heart and need to be respected and treated as such. They need to run and anyone who owns one needs to provide that opportunity. They have a grace when moving that is truly special and when allowed to run at full speed, will take your breath away.
They don’t like tension and can sulk with the best of them but when happy, will light up a room. There is nothing better than one of their butt wagging greetings, usually with their favorite toy in their mouth, when you come home even after a short absence. When they blush and smile, they will warm any heart. And, despite being hounds, they love to cuddle although they would never admit it!
They bring joy where ever they go and will attract plenty of attention. You will meet countless strangers on your walks/trips. We have had people in cars stop and ask about ours. In many ways, they are the perfect ice breaker. And, for those who are lucky enough to have a Pharaoh in their lives, even peripherally, they become a passion. You just can’t help but fall in love with them.
